Isaiah 2:10-22

New American Standard Bible

¹⁰^(A)Enter the rocky place and hide in the dust
^(B)From the terror of the Lord and from the splendor of His majesty.
¹¹The ^[a]^(C)proud look of humanity will be brought low,
And the ^(D)arrogance of people will be humbled;
And the Lord alone will be exalted on that day.

A Day of Reckoning Coming

¹²For the Lord of armies will have a day of reckoning
Against ^(E)everyone who is arrogant and haughty,
And against everyone who is lifted up,
That he may be brought low.
¹³And it will be against all the cedars of Lebanon that are lofty and lifted up,
Against all the ^(F)oaks of Bashan,
¹⁴Against all the ^(G)lofty mountains,
Against all the hills that are lifted up,
¹⁵Against every ^(H)high tower,
Against every fortified wall,
¹⁶Against all the ^(I)ships of Tarshish
And against all the delightful ships.
¹⁷And the pride of humanity will be humbled
And the arrogance of people will be brought low;
And the Lord alone will be exalted on that day,
¹⁸And the ^(J)idols will completely vanish.
¹⁹People will ^(K)go into caves of the rocks
And into holes in the ^[b]ground
Away from the terror of the Lord
And the splendor of His majesty,
When He arises ^(L)to terrify the earth.
²⁰On that day people will ^(M)throw away to the moles and the ^(N)bats
Their idols of silver and their idols of gold,
Which they made for themselves to worship,
²¹In order to ^(O)go into the clefts of the rocks and the crannies of the cliffs
Before the terror of the Lord and the splendor of His majesty,
When He arises to terrify the earth.
²²^[c]^(P)Take no account of man, whose breath of life is in his nostrils;
For ^[d]^(Q)why should he be esteemed?

The Day of the Lord

5 Now as to the ^(A)periods and ^[a]times, brothers and sisters, you ^(B)have no need of anything to be written to you. ²For you yourselves know full well that ^(C)the day of the Lord is coming ^(D)just like a thief in the night. ³While they are saying, “^(E)Peace and safety!” then ^(F)sudden destruction ^[b]will come upon them like ^(G)labor pains upon a pregnant woman, and they will not escape. ⁴But you, brothers and sisters, are not in ^(H)darkness, so that the day would overtake you ^[c]^(I)like a thief; ⁵for you are all ^(J)sons of light and sons of day. We are not of night nor of ^(K)darkness; ⁶so then, let’s not ^(L)sleep as ^[d]^(M)others do, but let’s be alert and ^[e]^(N)sober. ⁷For those who sleep, sleep at night, and those who are drunk, ^(O)get drunk at night. ⁸But since ^(P)we are of the day, let’s ^(Q)be ^[f]sober, having put on the ^(R)breastplate of ^(S)faith and love, and as a ^(T)helmet, the ^(U)hope of salvation. ⁹For God has not destined us for ^(V)wrath, but for ^(W)obtaining salvation through our Lord Jesus Christ, ¹⁰^(X)who died for us, so that whether we are awake or asleep, we will live together with Him. ¹¹Therefore, ^[g]encourage one another and ^(Y)build one another up, just as you also are doing.

Christian Conduct

¹²But we ask you, brothers and sisters, to ^(Z)recognize those ^(AA)who diligently labor among you and ^[h]^(AB)are in leadership over you in the Lord, and give you ^[i]instruction, ¹³and that you regard them very highly in love because of their work. ^(AC)Live in peace with one another. ¹⁴We urge you, brothers and sisters, admonish ^(AD)the ^[j]unruly, encourage ^(AE)the fainthearted, help ^(AF)the weak, be ^(AG)patient with everyone. ¹⁵See that ^(AH)no one repays another with evil for evil, but always ^(AI)seek what is good for one another and for all people. ¹⁶^(AJ)Rejoice always, ¹⁷^(AK)pray without ceasing, ¹⁸in everything ^(AL)give thanks; for this is the will of God for you in Christ Jesus. ¹⁹^(AM)Do not quench the Spirit, ²⁰do not utterly reject ^[k]^(AN)prophecies, ²¹but ^(AO)examine everything; ^(AP)hold firmly to that which is good, ²²abstain from every ^[l]form of evil.

²³Now ^(AQ)may the God of peace ^(AR)Himself sanctify you entirely; and may your ^(AS)spirit and soul and body be kept complete, ^(AT)without blame at ^(AU)the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ. ²⁴^(AV)Faithful is He who ^(AW)calls you, and He also will do it.

²⁵Brothers and sisters, ^(AX)pray for us^[m].

²⁶^(AY)Greet all the brothers and sisters with a holy kiss. ²⁷I put you under oath by the Lord to ^(AZ)have this letter read to all the ^(BA)brothers and sisters.

The New Birth

3 Now there was a man of the Pharisees, named ^(A)Nicodemus, a ^(B)ruler of the Jews; ²this man came to ^[a]Jesus at night and said to Him, “^(C)Rabbi, we know that You have come from God as a teacher; for no one can do these ^[b]^(D)signs that You do unless ^(E)God is with him.” ³Jesus responded and said to him, “Truly, truly, I say to you, unless someone ^(F)is born ^[c]again he cannot see ^(G)the kingdom of God.”

⁴Nicodemus *said to Him, “How can a person be born when he is old? He cannot enter his mother’s womb a second time and be born, can he?” ⁵Jesus answered, “Truly, truly, I say to you, unless someone is born of ^(H)water and the Spirit, he cannot enter ^(I)the kingdom of God. ⁶^(J)That which has been born of the flesh is flesh, and that which has been born of the Spirit is spirit. ⁷Do not be amazed that I said to you, ‘You must be born ^[d]again.’ ⁸^(K)The wind blows where it wishes, and you hear the sound of it, but you do not know where it is coming from and where it is going; so is everyone who has been born of the Spirit.”

⁹Nicodemus responded and said to Him, “How can these things be?” ¹⁰Jesus answered and said to him, “You are ^(L)the teacher of Israel, and yet you do not understand these things? ¹¹Truly, truly, I say to you, ^(M)we speak of what we know and ^(N)testify of what we have seen, and ^(O)you people do not accept our testimony. ¹²If I told you earthly things and you do not believe, how will you believe if I tell you heavenly things? ¹³^(P)No one has ascended into heaven, except ^(Q)He who descended from heaven: ^(R)the Son of Man. ¹⁴And just as ^(S)Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness, so must ^(T)the Son of Man ^(U)be lifted up, ¹⁵so that everyone who ^[e]believes will ^(V)have eternal life in Him.

¹⁶“For God so ^(W)loved the world, that He ^(X)gave His ^(Y)only Son, so that everyone who ^(Z)believes in Him will not perish, but have eternal life. ¹⁷For God ^(AA)did not send the Son into the world ^(AB)to judge the world, but so that the world might be saved through Him. ¹⁸^(AC)The one who believes in Him is not judged; the one who does not believe has been judged already, because he has not believed in the name of ^(AD)the only Son of God. ¹⁹And this is the judgment, that ^(AE)the Light has come into the world, and people loved the darkness rather than the Light; for ^(AF)their deeds were evil. ²⁰^(AG)For everyone who does evil hates the Light, and does not come to the Light, so that his deeds will not be exposed. ²¹But the one who ^(AH)practices the truth comes to the Light, so that his deeds will be revealed ^[f]as having been performed in God.”
